Meet The Team – Mia
What is your role at Fluency?
I’m currently a Data Consultant at Fluency. My focus is diving into data, analysing patterns, and turning those numbers into actionable insights. Essentially, I work with data to provide clients with strategic advice that can help drive their business decisions. I enjoy the challenge of solving complex problems and being able to tell stories from data in a way that makes sense to everyone, not just the data experts.
What clients do you work with?
Right now, I’m working with Magnolia and GSK. While I’m not juggling too many clients now, the projects I’m involved in are pretty exciting. Whether it’s their business model or need for detailed insights, each client brings something unique to the table. Plus, there’s always plenty of reading and research, which keeps me engaged and constantly learning.
What inspired you to get into data?
Data has always come naturally to me. Over the years, I’ve been in a range of roles—project manager, internal consultant, even a teacher—and one constant across all those roles was my love for using numbers to tell stories. I realized how much I enjoy drawing insights from data, whether it was tracking project performance, analysing competitor benchmarks, or looking at my students’ scores and engagement levels when I was teaching. Eventually, I took a break to pursue a master’s in Business Analytics, and that’s when everything clicked for me. The mix of business acumen and data just felt right, and it’s what continues to drive me today.
What’s your approach to telling stories with data?
I usually start by studying the main questions—really understanding what the client or the project needs to know. From there, I think about how the story should be framed. It could be chronological, following the timeline of events, or it could be based on psychological stages, like how users interact with something. Sometimes it’s hierarchical, where we work our way up from smaller details to a big-picture conclusion.
Once that’s clear, I break the big question down into smaller, manageable questions. This helps me figure out what kind of evidence I need, and then it’s just a matter of finding that data. If the evidence points in a different direction than I expected, that’s okay too—I’ll adjust and let the data guide the story. It’s a bit of a back-and-forth process, but it ensures that the final narrative is clear and grounded in the facts.
What type of projects are you working on currently?
Right now, I’m preparing consultancy reports, answering specific client questions, and making sense of the bigger picture through data. It’s not just about crunching numbers but also about presenting those insights in a way that makes a difference to the client’s strategy. Every project is different, and I love the diversity in challenges that come my way.
It can’t all be data! What do you enjoy outside of work?
I’m definitely a homebody, but I’ve got a bit of a paradox going on because I also love to travel. It’s like I enjoy the idea of being “at home” in different countries! When I’m not working, I like to keep things simple with crafts—I enjoy knitting and painting, which help me unwind. I also try to stay active by going to a dance class once a week, which is a fun way to stay fit. And when it comes to downtime, I’m really into science fiction. The “Three-Body Problem” series has totally captivated me, and I can spend hours geeking out over mythology and Buddhism too. I think those interests bring a nice balance to my life outside of work!
How’s life at Fluency as an international student?
Honestly, working at Fluency as an international student has been a great experience. I get to bring my own unique perspectives to the team, and I love how everyone here has their own backgrounds and stories to share. The diversity at Fluency really makes for a dynamic environment. The team is super friendly, and I like our Wednesday huddles—it’s a great way to catch up and share ideas. Plus, I love the area; being in Soho means there’s an endless variety of food options to explore, which keeps my appetite satisfied! Being part of such a multicultural team means I’m constantly learning and adapting, and it’s really rewarding to see how everyone’s input comes together to create something bigger.
